Before buying

What is the difference between the STIHL connected Hub and the STIHL connected mobile Hub?

The STIHL connected mobile Hub is able to connect to the Internet via a LTE cellular connection and contains a GPS module for determining the hub's location. Visually you can recognize the STIHL connected mobile Hub by the label on the back of the hub.

How much mobile data does the STIHL connected mobile Hub consume per month?

Data consumption is highly dependent on your fleet size. We recommend a data volume of at least 1 GB per month for use via mobile communications.

In addition, we recommend setting up a WLAN / WiFi connection to minimize cellular use. The STIHL connected Hub then accesses the WiFi connection - as soon as it is available.

Installation

The middle LED lights up red briefly when the connection is established. What does that mean?

During the connection setup, the middle LED may light up red for a few seconds, as the STIHL connected Hub does not yet have an Internet connection during this phase. The LED should change to yellow or green after a short time. If this is not the case please check the selected Internet connection and your entries.

How does the configuration of the STIHL connected Hub work, step by step?

To configure the STIHL connected Hub, please follow the instructions after connecting to the hub with a Wi-Fi connection or the instructions in the user manual.

What is an SSID and for what do I need it?

SSID stands for "Service Set Identifier" and represents the name of a WLAN or WiFi network.
To configure the STIHL connected Hub, it sets up its own WiFi network, that you connect to with a smartphone or computer. A wizard will then guide you through the installation process. The SSID and password for this network can be found on the nameplate on the back of your STIHL connected Hub. Once completed you will use your existing WiFi network to connect your STIHL connected Hub to the Internet.

Where can I find the serial number and SSID of my STIHL connected Hub?

Both pieces of information can be found on the nameplate on the back of the STIHL connected Hub.
The 9-digit serial number is located above the barcode.
The SSID or WiFi network name as well as the corresponding password, which is needed to configure the Hub, are located under the barcode and are marked "SSID" and "PW".

What is an APN and what is it needed for?

APN stands for "Access Point Name" and is only required for configuring the mobile connection of the STIHL connected mobile Hub.
The APN is different depending on the network provider / provider.
For more information, please contact your network provider or the vendor of your SIM card.

Why do I need to specify the APN?

The APN must be specified so that the STIHL connected mobile Hub can establish an Internet connection via the mobile network. It is not necessary to specify the APN if you want to connect the STIHL connected mobile Hub to the Internet via LAN or WiFi.

Is the APN username and my APN password mandatory or optional?

That depends on the network provider. Whether the APN is necessary will depend on your mobile network provider or the vendor of the SIM card.

Where can I find my APN, APN username and APN password?

The APN information depends on your mobile network provider. Therefore, please contact your network provider or the vendor of your SIM card.
Usually this information is also available online. From your search engine and enter "APN" and the name of your mobile network provider as the search term.

How can I integrate the STIHL connected Hub into a new WLAN or WiFi network?

Put the STIHL conneted Hub into configuration mode by briefly pressing (< 1 second) the reset button by using a paper clip.
When the middle LED turns to white you can connect to the STIHL conneted Hub with a WiFi capable device like your smartphone. Load the configuration page of the STIHL connected Hub via a  device like your smartphone and enter the access data for the new WLAN . WiFi network there.
You will need to do this if you changed the name or password of your WiFi network.

How do I connect my existing Smart Connectors and STIHL Smart Batteries to my STIHL connected Hub?

Once the STIHL connected Hub setup process has been successfully completed, the runtime data of your Smart Connectors and networked Smart Batteries is automatically transmitted to the STIHL Cloud approximately every five minutes. No further action is required on your part.

Can I use my STIHL connected Hub in different WLAN / WiFi networks?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to use a STIHL connected Hub in several WLAN / WiFi networks at the same time. The STIHL connected Hub can only be connected to one network at a time.

Can I use several STIHL connected accounts in one STIHL connected Hub?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to use a STIHL connected Hub with several STIHL connected accounts at the same time.

What do I need to do after the update is started during configuration?

Wait until the update is complete. This may take several minutes. During the process, the lower LED flashes green. After the update is complete, the STIHL connected Hub restarts automatically. You can proceed and reconnect to the Hub once the top and middle LEDs turn white.

What requirements must the WLAN / WiFi network meet so that a connection can be established with the STIHL connected Hub?

Please make sure your WLAN / WiFi router is configured as follows:

  • Make sure that the dynamic IP assignment of your router is activated.
  • Make sure the network is visible to all devices.
  • Make sure the network is password protected.

Which requirements must the LAN network meet so that a connection can be established with the STIHL connected Hub?

The following requirements must be met by the LAN network:

  • Make sure that your router's dynamic IP assignment is enabled.

Which screws can I use to mount my STIHL connected Hub on the wall?

To ensure a firm hold, use #6 screws with a head diameter of about 1/4 inch.

Which top-hat rail can I use to mount my STIHL connected Hub on the wall?

Use a standard top hat rail with a wall thickness of 1.5 mm to ensure a secure hold.

Where can I find the web address and password for the configuration page of the STIHL connected Hub?

The web address and password for the WLAN / WiFi of the STIHL connected Hub ("hotspot") is contained in the QR code on the nameplate on the back of the Hub. Scanning with a smartphone automatically establishes a connection.
In addition, the information is also printed on the nameplate and can be entered manually. "SSID" denotes the name of the network, "PW" is the password.

How can I open the configuration page of the STIHL connected Hub?

To open the configuration page, please scan the QR code on the back of the STIHL connected Hub with a smartphone. You can also enter the access data manually. Any WLAN / WiFi enabled device (e.g. smartphone, tablet, notebook, etc.) can be used to configure the hub.

The middle LED of the STIHL connected Hub flashes and changes to white within a few seconds. What can I do to update my STIHL connected Hub?

This behavior indicates that your STIHL connected Hub already has the latest software version installed. Continue setting up your Hub by reconnecting to the STIHL connected Hub.

The upper and middle LEDs are green, but I cannot add my STIHL connected Hub in the STIHL connected portal. What can I do?

Please check that you have entered the correct email address for your STIHL connected account.
A reset of the STIHL connected Hub to factory settings is required to change the email address.

Should I connect my STIHL connected Hub to a LAN or a WLAN / WiFi network?

We recommend connecting the STIHL connected Hub to your network via an Ethernet cable for configuration. This is the easiest way to ensure a stable Internet connection.

How do I add the STIHL connected Hub to my STIHL connected account?

  1. Configure your STIHL connected Hub by following the instructions on the configuration pages.
  2. At the end, confirm the configuration with "finalize".
  3. Log in to the STIHL connected portal (connect.stihl.com) with your STIHL connected account.
  4. Add your STIHL connected Hub via the "+" button in the STIHL connected portal.

Functionality

What information do the LEDs on the housing of the STIHL connected Hub display?

From top to bottom, the LEDs on the STIHL connected Hub show the following:

  • the operating status
  • the connection status
  • a data transmission (e.g. for updates).

What does it mean when the top LED is solid green?

The STIHL connected Hub is set up and ready for use.

What does it mean when the top LED is solid white?

The STIHL connected Hub is ready to be setup. Please follow the setup instructions in your web browser after connecting to the hub's Wi-Fi. The user manual can also be consulted for additional information.

What does it mean when the top LED flashes white?

The STIHL connected Hub is starting up. The startup process can take up to two minutes.

What does it mean when the top LED is solid red?

There is an error with your hub. Please reset your STIHL connected Hub by pressing the reset button on the bottom of the hub to the left of the power cord and try to add it again. If this does not resolved your issue please contact STIHL Support.

What does it mean when the top LED flashes red?

When the upper LED flashes red, the STIHL connected Hub has been factory reset. All information, such as WLAN or mobile access data and the link to your STIHL connected account, will be deleted. This process may take a few minutes. After resetting, the STIHL connected hub will reboot itself and must be reconfigured.

What does it mean when the center LED is solid white?

The remote network is active. The STIHL connected Hub can be configured.
To start the configuration, a Wi-Fil or LAN connection to the STIHL connected Hub must be established with your smartphone or computer. Scan the QR code on the nameplate of the hub or manually enter the web address shown on the nameplate (SSID and PW).

What does it mean when the center LED is solid yellow?

The STIHL connected Hub is connected to the Internet but is not connected to the STIHL cloud. This means data from your connectors is not being transmitted yet. This may take a few minutes to complete depending on your internet connection.

What does it mean when the center LED is solid red?

The STIHL connected Hub cannot connect to the Internet.
Please check the settings (Network ID, password etc) for your network.

What does it mean when the center LED is solid green?

The STIHL connected Hub is connected to the Internet and to the STIHL cloud.
This means data from your Smart Connectors is now being transmitted to the STIHL connected portal. The data is updated approximately every five minutes.

What does it mean when the lower LED flashes green?

  1. A brief flashing of the lower LED (a few seconds) indicates that the STIHL connected Hub is transmitting data from the Smart Connectors within range to the STIHL cloud.
  2. A longer flashing of the lower LED (a few minutes) indicates a software update. Make sure that the power supply and Internet connection of the STIHL connected Hub are stable.

How do I know if the STIHL connected box is online and transmitting connector data?

When the upper LED and the middle LED light up green continuously, your STIHL connected Hub is online and connector data is being transmitted to the STIHL connected portal.
Smart connector data is updated approximately every five minutes.

How can I update my STIHL connected Hub?

  1. The STIHL connected Hub is updated automatically if you selected "automatic update" during setup. You can turn automatic updates on from the detail page of the STIHL connected Hub in the STIHL connected portal by checking the box "Update STIHL connected box automatically".
  2. If you deactivated automatic updates, you can manually search for and trigger updates on the details page of the STIHL connected Hub in the STIHL connected portal using the "Search for update" button. As soon as you have requested an update, it will be installed on your STIHL connected Hub within 24 h (provided the STIHL connected Hub is connected to the Internet and plugged in). The STIHL connected Hub can continue to be used until the update is performed and will restart automatically after the update process.

Can the STIHL connected Hub also be supplied with power via an alternative USB interface?

The STIHL connected Hub has an input voltage of 5V DC and requires up to10 watts.
Please also be sure to observe the instructions in the user manual.

Can I unlock my SIM card via the STIHL connected Hub?

You can unlock your SIM card by entering a PIN.
If you have entered an incorrect PIN several times, you may have to unlock the SIM card by contacting your cellular carrier.

How can I reset the STIHL connected Hub to factory settings?

Press and hold the reset button on the bottom left next to the power cord of the Hub for five seconds. The upper LED flashes red and all settings are reset. Please wait until the STIHL connected Hub restarts itself. This may take a few minutes.

How often is the operating time data for my products updated by the STIHL connected Hub in the STIHL connected portal?

The operating time data of your products is synchronized with the STIHL connected portal portal approximately every five minutes.

Please note:
If there are no connectors in range, the STIHL connected Hub will not transmit any data. The range depends on the environmental conditions and is approximately 30 feet.

Can I see whether my Hub is currently connected to the mobile network, the WLAN / WiFi or the LAN network?

If you have configured all three network types, the STIHL connected Hub will connect in the following order.

  1. LAN wired network
  2. WLAN / WiFi
  3. Cellular mobile network.

You can not see which network the STIHL connected Hub is connected to.

How quickly are my "connected devices" recognized by the STIHL connected Hub?

For reliable runtime transmission to take place, the Smart Connectors should be within 30 feet of the STIHL connected Hub for at least 10 - 20 seconds.

Why is the name of a STIHL connected Hub additionally displayed in the "last update" column in the product overview for some products?

If the Smart Connector data for a machine is transferred from a STIHL connected Hub to the STIHL Cloud, this is also displayed in the "Last update" column. If no name of a STIHL connected Hub is given, the information was transmitted from another device (e.g. smartphone).

Troubleshooting

My inserted SIM card is not recognized. What can I do?

Please check the following items:

  • Make sure that the SIM card is inserted into the STIHL connected mobile Hub before plugging in the power cord.
  • Make sure that a SIM PIN is activated.
  • Check that the APN name is entered for correctly.
  • Make sure your SIM card is a data-only SIM card or an IoT SIM card.

I scanned the QR code but the configuration page does not open automatically. What can I do?

Please open the WLAN settings of your smartphone and check whether you are connected to the WLAN of the STIHL connected Hub. If not, connect to the WLAN of the STIHL connected Hub by manually entering the access data. If necessary, you will be asked whether you want to "log in to the WLAN". This is necessary to get to the configuration page.

My STIHL connected Hub cannot establish a connection via the LAN network. What can I do?

  • Make sure that a connection to the Internet can be established via the LAN you are using.
  • Make sure that the dynamic IP assignment of your router is activated.
  • Make sure that the STIHL connected Hub is not blocked by your firewall.

My STIHL connected Hub cannot establish a connection via the WLAN / WiFi network. What can I do?

  • Check the entered access data (SSID and password) for the WLAN / WiFi connection.
  • Make sure that the WLAN / WiFi used has a connection to the Internet.
  • Make sure that the dynamic IP assignment of your router is enabled.
  • Make sure that the WLAN / WiFi network is visible.
  • Make sure that the WLAN / WiFi network is password protected.
  • Make sure that the STIHL connected Hub is not blocked by your firewall.

My STIHL connected mobile Hub cannot establish a connection via the mobile interface. What can I do?

  • Make sure that you have sufficient mobile phone reception at your location and you are close to the the STIHL connected Hub (not behind a wall).
  • Check the access data entered for the mobile cellular connection, such as SIM pin and APN.
  • Make sure you use a compatible SIM card.

The operating time data for my products is not updated by the STIHL connected Hub in the STIHL connected portal. What can I do?

  • Make sure all products are within range - less than 30 feet away.
  • Make sure that the Hub is online. The top and middle LEDs should be solid green.
  • Make sure that the Smart Connectors you want to read are in the same STIHL connected account as the STIHL connected Hub.
  • Make sure that the batteries of the connectors are not dead.
  • The STIHL connected Hub is updating itself. Wait until the update is complete.

I don't see the "Connected" tab in the STIHL connected portal - what's the reason?

To manage a STIHL connected Hub, the corresponding "Manage account" authorization is required. If the "Connected" tab is not displayed, the authorization is missing. This must then either be granted by the account administrator or the STIHL connected Hub must be set up via another user with the appropriate authorization.

Why does the position displayed in the STIHL connected portal not match the actual position of the STIHL connected mobile Hub?

There may be a deviation of up to 325 feet between the actual position of the STIHL connected mobile hub and the displayed position.

Why is the position of my STIHL connected mobile box not displayed in the STIHL connected portal?

The STIHL connected mobile Hub can only send location information to the STIHL connected portal if a mobile connection is active.
No position can be transmitted when connected to the Internet via a LAN or WLAN / WiFi connection.
