  Appearance

  Decorative conifer growing to heights of 20 or 30 m. Branches usually rise upwards like the arms of a candelabra. Older trees have roughly furrowed, scaly segmented bark. The male flowers are pale brownish-yellow in colour.

  Dark green, sharply pointed needles, 8 to 15 cm long, 0.1 to 0.2 cm wide. Needles arranged in pairs.

  Fruits

  Ovate, pale brown or shiny yellow-brown cones, seated or almost seated. They break open and drop off soon after in the third year. Slightly or obtusely carinated scale up to 8 cm long.

  Bark

  Dark brown when young, pale grey or blackish grey when older. Shallow furrows, deepening with age.
