Finished 2-piece crankshaft
Machining of individual components.

The components of the STIHL 2- and 3-piece crankshafts are hot or cold forged parts. In other words, crankshaft journal and counterweight are one piece. The individual components are first rough turned on a lathe and then precision ground.

A team of skilled workers with joint responsibility for the overall part carries out the various production steps, directly integrating quality assurance in the machining process. These elements of self directed work groups assure the constant high quality typical of STIHL.
The requirements for machining seem very high. Are the parts machined manually or automatically? Our processes are highly automated and optimized. This makes sure that dimensional tolerances are maintained, thereby ensuring the legendary STIHL quality. In general every crankshaft is the same. Or, do you see technical innovation in machining? Yes, there are innovations. For example, we replaced highly complex grinding processes by hard turning. This saves a washing operation and pays off in time, costs and environmental protection. I am looking at a wide range of individual components here. What are the next processing steps? All forgings are processed by turning, milling and thread-rolling. Thread-rolling provides quality advantages compared to the traditional thread-cutting process. Recently, one of my customers wanted to order an individual shaft for a crankshaft. Can I buy such a part? No. All critical components are only available as finished and perfectly matched system modules. This is the only way that you and your customers can be sure of receiving 100% STIHL quality.
