Crankshaft.

The crankshaft is the heart of every STIHL engine. It consists of various components converting force into movement. Using the tie between piston and crankshaft, the connecting rod, linear movement of the piston is converted into the rotary movement of the crankshaft.

Depending on the various engine requirements we manufacture 2-, 3-, and 5-piece crankshafts at STIHL.
Does every chainsaw require a different crankshaft? Yes, STIHL produces 3 basic models, 2-, 3-, and 5-piece crankshafts, for the different power requirements of our chainsaws and powertools. The chainsaws are exposed to extremely high stresses. This surly does not allow for large dimensional tolerances, right? Geometrical and dimensional tolerances at STIHL are in the micron range. Anything else would not satisfy our requirements. We like being a little bit more precise… STIHL engines sound very smooth and balanced in operation. How fast do they run? With approximately 16,000 rpm a STIHL crankshaft turns almost at the same speed as a Formula 1 race car. As you can see, our crankshafts deliver top performance. Can I order individual crankshaft as a replacement part? Or do my customers have to buy a new saw in case of a problem? Of course crankshafts are available separately. You can buy crankshafts, like all other components, as spare parts for your customers without problem for a long time after the product has been discontinued.
