Visual inspection of the saw chains
Saw chain quality testing.

Regardless whether we are producing only a single part or huge quantities - like saw chains , to provide constant quality is top priority at STIHL. Consequently, during the production process we carry out random measurements as well as using the appropriate materials for each application. In the case of saw chains, the teeth made of high-alloyed chrome-nickel steel give our saws the right bite.

Each saw chain is stretched with a defined tensile stress before packing. This process reduces chain elongation on first use and therefore has a positive effect on the operating life of the chain.
Are the production facilities for saw chains developed in-house, or are these manufacturing machines available on the market? The manufacture of our saw chains involves highly specialized requirements that no machine "off the shelf" can meet. We therefore rely on our own development work. The STIHL machine design department has performed admirably in this respect. A chain of this kind has to withstand considerable stresses. Are STIHL saw chains subjected to special inspection and testing? Naturally, our saw chains are subjected to comprehensive inspection and testing, from the incoming inspection of the raw material to the final quality test before shipment. Therefore our chains always last longer than any others. The forces acting on the saw chain cause it to lengthen. How do you contain this factor? To minimize subsequent elongation during first use, we subject every saw chain to high and constant tensile stress at the end of production. This "stretching" or "racking" process also indirectly increases the
operating life of the chain.
How does STIHL obtain the high breaking strength of its saw chains? The rivets are hardened in a high-frequency field at 10,000 Watt. This way, we get the breaking resistance that we need for tough daily use in wood.
