Integrated machining station at injection molding machine
Manufacturing machine design.

STIHL realized at a very early stage that its own in-house manufacturing machine design department can provide the driving force for new manufacturing technology and technological progress.

STIHL manufacturing machine design left its mark on both, the assembly systems and machinery for the manufacturing of engine components.

This unit has three main activities:
-   central machining,
- special machine and jig design and
- die and mould design.
Are there any production machines here that you alone make? Over the course of time we have built up unique manufacturing know-how, which we channel into the manufacturing processes of our products. This knowledge is something that we cannot buy, but had to work out for ourselves. STIHL is based in a part of Germany where there are already many specialized manufacturers of production machinery. Buying of new equipment is surely an option? We examined this question many years ago and came to a different conclusion. The special requirements of our products, the know-how developed inside our own plants resulting in faster responses pointed towards the in-house production of manufacturing equipment. Does manufacturing machine design refer only to tool shops or does the term mean more at STIHL? No, it goes much further. We also make use of the special knowledge our design engineers outside the tool shop. Do you also build manufacturing equipment for your plants abroad? Yes, and that is another advantage. The customers of our machine design department are all production facilities within the STIHL Group. This ensures the uniform quality of our products, regardless of the
production site.
