Magnesium die-casting.

Since the early 70's we have been producing light alloy castings at our plant in Prüm, Germany. Today, this facility is one of the biggest and most modern die-cast manufacturing plants in Europe.

Originally, this facility was planned exclusively for manufacturing STIHL components. However, our high-quality castings opened up the market with other users of light alloy components. Today, quality castings from STIHL can be found for example in many well-known automobile brands and high-speed trains.
Why does STIHL use magnesium for engine components? The decisive advantage of this material is its combination of low specific weight and high strength. Magnesium is lighter than aluminium, can be recycled and is very durable. Magnesium is a very sensitive material. How do you ensure parts quality with your extremely thin-walled parts? That is precisely why STIHL started producing these parts in-house. With our know-how and systematic quality assurance we produce to a quality standard that even won the trust of leading car manufacturers. What advantage offers magnesium in my daily work? Magnesium, while being stronger then plastic, makes the saw lighter and easier to handle. It therefore is optimally suited for the tough demands of work in forest and garden. Surfaces of STIHL chainsaws are particularly robust. Do they have impact-resistant paint? You could put it that way. The magnesium parts are powder-coated. A paint powder is electro statically charged and then cured at 200°C. The resulting surface is much more resistant than any sprayed paint.
