The gasoline motor.

No chainsaw could function without an engine. That's why we start our plant tour here. A STIHL-engine is the central element of all STIHL products. With considerable success we pay specific attention to continuously improve our engine designs.

Since the invention of the first gasoline driven chainsaw, numerous innovations have improved performance while reducing gas consumption, emissions and noise levels.

One outstanding example of STIHL's research and development department is the first chainsaw with catalytic converter, setting yet again higher standards worldwide.
When was the chainsaw invented, and when did STIHL first start to manufacture chainsaws? Having already developed the first "cut-off chainsaw with electric drive" Andreas Stihl founded his first company in 1926 in Cannstatt, Germany. Commercial breakthrough came in1959 with the hand held, one-man chainsaw model STIHL "Contra". What is the importance of engine manufacturing in your company? The engine is the heart of our machines. Optimal tuning of cylinder, crankshaft and housing provides the foundation for the engines for all STIHL units and therefore is the basis for the almost legendary STIHL quality. What is the power to weight ratio of a STIHL chainsaw? Depending on the specific application, we attain values that would enable us to join Formula 1 autoracing (with up to 16,000 rpm). STIHL sells its products exclusively via servicing dealers. Why is that the case? Servicing dealers can make sure that custom-
ers are purchasing the appropriate product for their needs, can impart instructions for proper operation and maintenance, can alert customers to protective equipment and ex-
pedient accessories, and can offer service.
