Mowing in different kinds of terrain

If you use the correct mowing technique you can achieve amazing results with your STIHL brushcutter. Even if this is the first time you have used a brushcutter, you will soon master the correct mowing techniques. Simply swing the brushcutter in a semi-circle from right to left, advancing step by step as you work.

Below we show you the basic technique and some advice to enable you to mow even larger areas rapidly and achieve good results.

Because the cutting tool rotates counter-clockwise, the commonest mowing action in practice tends to be from right to left. Advantage of this method: the cuttings fall onto the area that has already been mown.

Basic technique in tall grass

In very tall grass or tough weeds, it is advisable to mow in two directions: first, slice off the top part of the weeds with a left to right movement, then cut the lower part with the return movement (right to left). In this case too, the cuttings fall to the left.

The best way to mow larger, flat surfaces is the square method. Divide the area to be mown into squares, then always work along the outsides towards the centre.

Along slopes - in strips

The strip method is a very good way of working on slopes: mow a strip parallel to the slope, then return along the mown swathe. Then mow the next strip above that. In this case too, the cuttings are always deposited on the area that has already been mown.

It's best to use a nylon line when mowing right up to trees or bushes, to avoid damaging the branches or trunk. If there are several plants fairly close together, clear a circle round them before mowing. Use the guard on your brushcutter as a guide. Guide the guard around the trunk as you work round the tree or bush. That way, the trunk is protected and the area around the trunk is mown.
