Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris)
The Scots Pine is a picturesque large tree found in a variety of forms, 10-30m tall. The bark is smooth and orange-coloured near the crown, becoming fissured in brown and grey nearer the base. The cones are small and grey-brown in colour.
Flowers
Flowering period V, male flowers are yellow, female flowers reddish. Numerous male flowers, catkin-like. Female flowers are cone-like.
Fruits
Conical pendent, grey-brown cones, often in groups. Short-stalked, ripen in the second year. Up to 7cm long. Scale leaf is diamond-shaped and usually flat.
Bark
Fox-red bark, dark grey in the furrows, orange-red with fine scales when young, with shallow furrows when older. Plate-like.
