Demands
For acid to slightly alkaline soil in locations which are neither too hot nor too dry (danger of leaf drop!). Tolerates urban climates, wind-resistant, very frost-hardy, not fume-hardy. Suckering.
Growth
Height of growth: 2 m - 3 m. Spread: 1.5 m - 2 m. Fragrant, slow-growing, suckering decorative shrub with numerous branches.
Leaves
Elliptic to lanceolate leaves with serrated margins, 4 - 10 cm long, 2.5 - 4 cm wide. Leaf stalk 1 - 2.5 cm long. Decussate arrangement. Leaves are green above, pale green and slightly hairy below, tough-skinned. Arcuate feathery veining. Particularly decorative red (violet) autumn colouring. Leaves are poisonous for humans.
Flowers
Flowering period: III-IV (sometimes also XI/XII). White tubular, fragrant blossoms, 1.2 - 1.6 cm wide. Pink buds. Inflorescence: 3 - 5 cm wide panicle, extremely decorative.
Fruits
Black stone fruit, red when young. Ripens in late June, very decorative. Fruits are poisonous for humans.
Bark
Grey-brown or grey-green peeling outer bark. Glossy green-brown branches. Bark is poisonous for humans.
Roots
Shallow-rooting, suckering.
