Ovate to elliptical leaves, alternate, in two rows with long pointed tip, rounded to broadly wedge-shaped base and serrated edge. Leaves are glossy green above, plain green below. 6-12cm long, 2-6cm wide, leaf stem 1.5-3cm long. yellow or orange autumn colouring.
Flowering period IV-V. White or pink blossoms, filled or half-filled, 3-5cm wide, with 3-7 blossoms in the corymb, of particular ornamental value. The pretty flowers usually appear before the leaves.
Brown bark in the fissures, greenish, dark grey-brown or grey-green bark, with horizontal lenticular banding (spot-like, separate), sometimes peeling off when older, very attractive. Branches are dark green, sometimes dark brown-red, during the first year.
